A personal support workers job is to provide support to those people who need help in carrying out their daily needs. Generally a personal support worker is supervised either by a nurse or any other medical professional. The extent of supervision and the steps in performing the duty greatly depends on the employer’s policy, legislation and the condition of the client. As you gain experience, you will get adjusted and accommodated to your surroundings easily.
Main objectives of any personal support worker is to improve quality of their client’s life by helping them with their daily needs and activities. It is very important to take care of their clients in a kind, understanding and sensitive manner.
Personal support worker can help their clients in several other ways by attending to their physical needs like encourage independence, provide comfort and company and boosting self confidence. You can encourage client to live on their own by providing your support to him/her.
It is very important for personal support workers to conduct themselves in a professional way but yet be understanding and compassionate towards residents/clients. Support offered by you can always bring sunshine and positive look in your client’s life which is an invaluable gift.
Health care services offered by the personal support worker in Canada and Ontario consist of a wide range of settings, which include providing home care in the community care facilities on long term basis, home support, conducting group homes, hospitals and providing educational facilities and many more.
Education of a PSW (Personal Support Worker) require an individual who is willing to pursue a career as certified PSW. The majority of students can enroll for a two semester course in a college of health care school. It is a sandwich course that combines all the levels of health care aid program, home support worker, respite worker programs and personal attendant course. Students can also attend accelerated courses at private colleges and also at courses that are run by local school boards across the province of Ontario.
Personal support workers though are certified professionals; they are not regulated health care worker like others. It is not mandatory for them to have certification or registration or pass through any examination to start working as PSW.However the scope of their practice is determined by government regulated bodies.
There are several organizations and institutions that offer personal support training for individuals that include adult education divisions of some education boards, non-profit organizations and trusts, private colleges that are registered and community colleges. A personal support worker program consists of two training standards.
In short personal support worker is a person that helps residents or clients in their day-to-day activities to improve their quality of life. They occupy an important place in medical teams. They are first in identifying problems related to their clients and help them accordingly by offering quality services. Though the job is physically and mentally demanding in nature, it is rewarding career if you have compassion to serve people.
