About Game Design Education

by

Gianluca Bassile

Game Design consists on development of the rules, the environment, the content, the storyline, characters and more. It is is much more complex to become a good game designer rather than a filmmaker, because you have to think in all the concepts and details concerning that \”reality\”.

Game designers have to compose proposals based on their ideas and must report them to the person responsible for the project, with a prototype that has to work as an example of the project requirements. Those requirements include the needed budget, schedule / time and human / technological resources to get the project finished.

At present day, games has turned in a very large and complex world, and some companies like Blizzard, Ubi Soft or Electronic Arts require dozens or hundreds of technicians (programmers, designers, stylists, artist, musicians or graphic designers) to be develope that kind of projects.

According to this situation, there are a lot of schools in the U.S. offering courses, degrees and programs in the ??game design and development. These programs are offered by schools in all the US states, but some of them have a long tradition in this field, for example California, New York or Pennsylvania, and also in these states, is where you will find the top ranked colleges offering game design and related programs.
